073- Border and Trans-border Armed Actions (Nicaragua vs Costa Rica)
On July 28th, 1986, Nicaragua filed before an application instituting proceedings against Costa Rica before the International Court of Justice (ICJ). He accused the latter of alleged violations of international law, in particular as a result of military activities carried out against the Nicaraguan authorities by the “contras” from their territory.
However, in a communication of August 12th, 1987, Nicaragua, referring to an agreement signed on August 7th, 1987 in Guatemala by the Presidents of the five Central American States (the so-called “Esquipulas II” agreement), declared that it was withdrawing from the proceedings brought against Costa Rica. The case was removed from the roll by order of the President of August 19th,1987.
